Change your product’s title on Amazon FBA in a few easy steps

From the get-go, we need to understand that Amazon product listings not updating is, in most cases, due to one nagging issue: conflict in the listing’s ownership. Just to reiterate quickly, if you’re not the listing’s brand owner, you will likely not have the rights to update it – it’s that simple.

However, if you are the brand owner but not the one who originally created the listing, you might have to access another account to make the desired changes. Let’s say you have a Vendor account or, perhaps, someone else is selling your products using a Vendor account – that will be the account which has the content ownership. So, you’ll need to log in through that Vendor account and make the listing changes you need to from there. Simples!

Are you a trademark owner? Apply for Amazon Brand Registry without hesitation! Once you enrol your brand, you will have complete control over your product listings, so you’ll find it really easy to keep your pages updated as you desire and with the right information to keep buyers in the loop.

Now, let’s go over three easy ways in which you can change your product’s title:

First method

Go to ‘Inventory’ on your Amazon FBA account and then find ‘Manage Inventory’. Locate the product listing you wish to update or edit, and then choose ‘Edit’. Once you’re on the ‘Vital Info’ menu, you will see ‘Product Title’. Edit this as you wish and submit the changes by clicking ‘save and finish’. Amazon will get back to you with approval.

It’s important to know that Amazon may have put some restrictions on the things you can change in your product title; depending on your product and category, you may be able to change a lot of things or only a few. Additionally, if your product is already live, you have to undergo a waiting period for the new title to get approved and show up.

Second method

At times, Amazon may not accept significant product title edits right away; for instance, product titles on the active listing that you wish to change.

Even after hours, you realise that your product title has not been updated through the first method, use this method as an alternative:

Open a case and get in touch with seller support. Go to ‘Get Support’ in the Selling on Amazon section and select ‘Or, browse for your issue in the menu’. Then click on ‘Products, Listing, or Inventory’. Click on ‘Fix a product page’ and input your ASIN. Now click on ‘Fix detail page’, choose ‘Title’ to edit your product’s title, and then hit submit.

Third method

This is more or less the same as the second method. So, when you arrive on the Get Support page, choose ‘Your account’, then ‘Other account issues’, and describe the issues you are facing along with why exactly you want to change your product’s title. Submit to Amazon’s customer service. This is a quick way to go about it and, in some cases, may prove to be quicker than the second method.

Why it’s important to be brand registered on Amazon FBA

When we talk about issues sellers face in trying to change their product title on Amazon FBA, we have to understand how Amazon Brand Registry comes into play. It’s more than simply a feature – it is, in fact, the gateway to an entire lineup of tools and benefits, allowing registered brands and sellers to take full control over their product listings. This is very important in the context of changing your product’s title and making sure the changes stick!

Ultimately, this will protect your brand identity from scammers or counterfeiters, it will improve the shopping experience for buyers, and it will also help you improve your brand exposure on Amazon.

As we mentioned at the start of the article, sellers typically run into issues when trying to change or update their product’s title because:

  1. They are not brand owners or brand registered on Amazon.
  2. They do not have the brand ownership connected properly to their seller account, which means a different account was used to create the product listing – and now they are having trouble updating the listing name.

So, the take home for now is: get your Amazon brand approval to ensure you run into zero issues while updating the product title on Amazon FBA – well, that is, as long as Amazon hasn’t put any restrictions on what you can edit about your product’s title.

How do I check the status of my Amazon Brand Approval?

  • First, log into your Amazon Seller Central account.
  • Click on ‘Brands’. Alternatively, you can go directly to ‘brandregistry.amazon.com’.
  • Now choose Brand Applications. Find the ‘Manage’ tab and click on ‘Brand Applications’.
  • To check your brand status, go to the Brand Registry dashboard, and this is where you’ll see your brand application status. You’ll be able to see whether your brand has been accepted (although pending) or if there were issues or hiccups with the application.

Be patient and give it some time. Amazon’s internal team needs to scrutinise your application – so, that includes checking the trademark information, as well as confirming that your brand and products meet all the various eligibility criteria.

During this review process, Amazon may perform extra evaluations to ensure that your brand and its linked products are valid. If your brand already got approved, then you can access the plethora of tools and services Brand Registry offers. But if it is pending, then you have to wait on Amazon to complete their review process, there’s no way around that, unfortunately.

Are brand registry and trademark the same thing?

There’s an important distinction between Amazon Brand Registry and a trademark, and that’s in terms of purpose and scope.

You see, anyone can push an application for a trademark, which means they don’t even have to sell on Amazon in order to obtain the trademark. However, Brand Registry is Amazon’s own platform which is designed to let brand owners protect and manage their IP (intellectual property) within the marketplace.

Where a trademark is an instrument of legal protection, which applies globally and gives the applicant exclusive rights to a name, brand logo, or other identifiers (to prevent others from using the same which may confuse buyers) – Brand Registry is a programme which can help to protect and even enhance your brand’s position. So, its scope is restricted to the Amazon marketplace.

By combining a trademark and Brand Registry, you will not only have complete security but also full control over your brand identity as well as reputation – and that’s both on and off Amazon.

What can being brand registered help me do (or not do)?

Brand Registry is a great tool with lots of benefits for brands who have a registered trademark although, at this stage, a few things ought to be clarified in terms of how it actually helps sellers:

Control – As a brand owner, you have better control over your listing content. This includes having the ability to easily update your product’s title on FBA and having those changes stick.

Brand monitoring – You can monitor your brand on Amazon so you’ll know exactly how it is performing at any given time.

Amazon Vine – Enrol your brand in the Vine programme to get lots of verified and certified product reviews only (always great for business!).

Amazon Live – Livestream and interact with prospective buyers through Amazon Live, an excellent way to build rapport, trust, and loyalty around your brand.

A+ Content – Get access to A+ Content to improve the content which is displayed in your product listings.

Dedicated support team – Have access to a specialised, dedicated team which helps to fix and escalate incorrect listing contributions and/or variations, as well as another dedicated team which assists with the submission and escalation of IP infringement claims.

Here’s what Brand Registry is not designed to do:

  • Gate your brand or prevent/limit other sellers from selling it.
  • Give you the authority to blacklist or whitelist other sellers from selling your brand.
  • Allow someone other than the brand owner (you) to launch infringement claims against other sellers.

Closing thoughts

As you can see, being brand registered on Amazon FBA carries many benefits apart from the usual ones, like better brand protection and higher engagement with customers.

It allows you to seamlessly change your product’s title and ensure that the changes do not get undone.
